Stay Safe This Holiday Season with ReadyWisconsin’s Decorating Tips

Ensuring a Safe and Bright Holiday Season

With the holiday season in full swing, homes across Madison, Wis., are lighting up with festive decorations. ReadyWisconsin is urging residents to prioritize safety amid the holiday cheer, ensuring that homes remain a haven of joy rather than a source of potential hazards.

“The best way to enjoy peace of mind during the holidays is to remember safety comes first,” emphasized Greg Engle, Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator. “By taking a little extra care your home can be a place of cheer, not danger.”

Decorative lights and candles create a warm atmosphere during the holidays, but they can also pose fire risks. The National Fire Protection Association reports that decoration-related fires account for an average of 835 home fires annually, with holiday trees causing about 155 fires. To minimize these risks, consider the following tips:

  • Keep live trees well-watered and ensure artificial ones are labeled “Fire Resistant.” Position trees at least three feet from heat sources, including fireplaces or heaters.
  • Never leave candles unattended. Keep them in sight and away from flammable items. Opt for flameless candles when possible.
  • Avoid connecting more than three sets of incandescent lights and do not overload outlets.
  • Inspect light strings for damage, like worn cords or loose bulbs, and follow manufacturer’s guidelines for connecting light strands.
  • Utilize clips instead of nails to hang lights safely, preventing cord damage.
  • Turn off all decorative lights before sleeping or leaving home, and unplug extension cords when not in use.

Holiday decorations can also lead to accidents at home. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission notes roughly 160 daily injuries related to holiday decorating, with falls accounting for nearly half. During last year’s holiday season, about 14,900 individuals required emergency room treatment for these injuries. To enhance safety while decorating:

  • Select a sturdy ladder of appropriate height and weight capacity.
  • Wear shoes that offer reliable traction.
  • Avoid standing on chairs or tables when decorating.
  • Eliminate trip hazards such as clutter, cords, and excess furniture.
  • Repair uneven walkways and steps both inside and outside the home.

As family and friends gather for holiday festivities, maintaining fire safety is crucial. Keep kitchen areas distraction-free, move decorations away from stoves and ovens, and have a fire extinguisher accessible.

Regularly test smoke alarms, replacing batteries as needed, and ensure alarms are installed on every home level. Practice a fire escape plan with your family, knowing two exit routes from the house in case of emergency.
