Michigan Expands Free Lead-Reducing Filters to All Eligible Households

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has significantly broadened its public health programs with a key announcement. The comprehensive “Get Ahead of Lead” initiative, specifically the Statewide Filter Support Program, is now accessible to qualifying households across all Michigan communities.

Eligible residents can receive free certified lead-reducing drinking water filters and replacement cartridges directly from the state to safeguard their family’s health.

Eligibility Criteria

Households can qualify for a complimentary water filter if they meet both of the following conditions:

Medicaid Status: The household includes either a pregnant Medicaid enrollee or a child under 19 years old who is enrolled in Medicaid.

Plumbing Risk: The residence has or might have certain types of plumbing risks that could lead to lead exposure.

Protecting Your Home’s Drinking Water

Beyond just installing a water filter, the MDHHS advises taking these routine precautions to ensure the quality of tap water:

Keep Water Moving: Regularly use water for daily activities such as showering, washing dishes, doing laundry, and flushing toilets to prevent water stagnation in pipes.

Clean Aerators Regularly: At least once every six months, unscrew and clean your faucet aerators to remove any trapped sediment.

Run Cold Water: Before using tap water for drinking, cooking, or baby formula preparation, let it run until it feels cold.

The Importance of Lead Prevention

Preventing lead exposure is crucial as it can cause long-term health issues in children, including developmental delays and behavioral problems. While old plumbing is a common source, lead exposure can also come from household dust, soil, paint in pre-1978 homes, certain hobbies, or imported goods.
