Delaware County Celebrates 2025 Teacher and Superintendent of the Year

Celebrating Excellence in Education: Delaware County’s Distinguished Educators

This week, the Delaware County Council proudly recognized two exceptional figures in the educational landscape of Pennsylvania. Mr. Leon Smith and Dr. Tina Kane were celebrated at the council meeting on February 19 at the Government Center in Media for their remarkable contributions to education.

Mr. Leon Smith, a dedicated social studies and African American studies teacher at Haverford High School, received the prestigious title of 2025 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Meanwhile, Dr. Tina Kane, at the helm of the Marple Newtown School District, was honored as the 2025 Pennsylvania Superintendent of the Year by the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators. These accolades underscore the commitment and leadership evident within Delaware County’s educational framework.

Delaware County stands out among the state’s 67 counties for housing both of this year’s top educational honorees, a testament to the county’s dedication to educational excellence and leadership.

Celebrating Educational Leadership

With over two decades of teaching experience, Mr. Leon Smith has made a significant impact at Haverford High School by fostering an inclusive educational environment. His recognition as Teacher of the Year speaks to his dedication to inspiring students and promoting diversity in education.

“I think it’s important for students to realize the power of educators and how our influence extends outside of the classroom,” Mr. Smith shared. “We really need to elevate the profession. Right now, we’re in a teacher shortage, and it’s vital that we inspire the next generation of teachers.”

Dr. Tina Kane’s 30-year career in education has seen her rise through the ranks from teaching to her current role as superintendent. Under her leadership, Marple Newtown School District has thrived, particularly in STEM and social-emotional learning. Her recognition is especially meaningful as she continues to serve the community where she was educated.

“This award is especially meaningful because Delaware County is home to me. I was born and raised here, a proud graduate of Marple Newtown High School, and now have the privilege of serving the very community that shaped me,” Dr. Kane expressed.

She highlighted the collective efforts of teachers, administrators, and families in fostering student success. “Our success is built on teachers who inspire, administrators who lead with purpose, families who support us, and staff who care deeply for every student’s needs. Together, we strengthen not just our district, but the entire county,” she added.

Fostering Future Educators

In addition to honoring these educational leaders, the Delaware County Council showcased the Teacher Education Program (TEP), which offers high school juniors a unique opportunity to earn up to 38 college credits at no cost, preparing them for careers in education.

Available at Haverford High and Marple Newtown High Schools, this initiative combines academic coursework with practical teaching experiences, providing students a valuable head start in the field of education.

Council Chair Dr. Monica Taylor emphasized the importance of such programs, stating, “As someone deeply invested in the education and advancement of our community, I find it essential to highlight programs like TEP, which create a pipeline of future educators and ensure we continue to build a strong foundation for students across the county.”

A Proud Moment for Delaware County

The celebration of Mr. Smith and Dr. Kane’s accomplishments not only highlights their personal achievements but also reflects Delaware County’s prominence in educational leadership and innovation. The County Council extends its congratulations to both honorees for their dedication and service to the educational community of Delaware County.
