FDOE Applauds USDOE Directive to End Racial Preferences in Education

Florida Education Department Supports Federal Move to Eliminate Racial Preferences

The Florida Department of Education, headed by Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr., has expressed strong support for the recent directive from the U.S. Department of Education to end racial preferences in education. This initiative aligns with Florida’s ongoing efforts to eliminate racial discrimination and stereotyping within the state’s educational framework.

Florida, under Governor Ron DeSantis, has made significant strides in this area, particularly with the introduction of the Stop WOKE Act in 2022. This legislation was designed to prevent the teaching of concepts that could be considered discriminatory, such as Critical Race Theory. Furthermore, the act expanded the curriculum on African American History to enhance students’ comprehension of the effects of prejudice and racism.

In 2023, another legislative measure, Senate Bill 266, was signed into law by Governor DeSantis. This bill prohibits the allocation of federal or state funds for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs deemed discriminatory. It also restricts educational content that suggests systemic issues of racism, sexism, oppression, and privilege are ingrained in U.S. institutions. The Florida State Board of Education further solidified this stance by banning DEI programs and policies in the Florida College System, leading to a significant reduction in general education courses offered.

The Florida Department of Education’s statement reflects their readiness to assist other states in adhering to the federal directive, emphasizing Florida’s leading role in educational reform aimed at removing racial preferences and discrimination.
