Lehigh University Celebrates Record-Breaking Fulbright Scholarship Wins
In a testament to its longstanding commitment to global education, Lehigh University has achieved a new milestone with its latest Fulbright Scholarship winners. For the 2026-27 academic year, two students have been awarded the prestigious scholarship, while another has been designated as an alternate. This achievement underscores the university’s dedication to fostering international collaboration and understanding.
Afiwa Afandalo, a member of the class of 2024, will soon embark on a journey to Cameroon, where she will contribute as an English teaching assistant. Meanwhile, Kendalin Flores from the class of 2026 will be conducting marine biology research in the Dominican Republic. Additionally, Karina Makhani, also from the class of 2026, has been named an alternate for a Master of Applied Sciences and Engineering: Computer Science program at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium.
This year, Lehigh has surpassed previous records by combining nine faculty Fulbright Scholarships with its student awards. The university’s prior best was six Fulbright scholars in the 2018-19 academic year, with the second-highest being five scholars last year.
Bill Hunter, director of fellowship advising and UN Programs at Lehigh, highlighted the university’s unique educational approach as a key factor in this success. “Lehigh’s interdisciplinary approach to education, and the purposeful development of students with self-other-world perspectives, is really attractive to the Fulbright Commission,” he stated. “Through the Fulbright Scholarship, our students become Future Makers on a global scale. While this is a record year, our current students and faculty are well-positioned to win even more Fulbrights. We hope to shatter this record in future years.”
The Fulbright Program, a flagship international exchange initiative sponsored by the U.S. government, has been promoting mutual understanding between the U.S. and other nations since its inception in 1946. Annually, it awards scholarships to about 9,000 students, scholars, teachers, and professionals from the U.S. and over 160 other countries, according to the Fulbright Program website.
These prestigious awards enable recipients to transform their academic and professional goals into real-world impacts across various scientific and humanistic fields.
